The Riley Brandt Enigma

Adored by Devils fans, annoyed by other fans – just how a player should be, right?

It seems to be a frequent topic of conversation amongst fan-speak, that those who do not support the Cardiff Devils, would either be irate towards Brandt for just existing or dumbfounded as to why he is on the roster.

Unfortunately, some Devils fans feel the same for the latter, comparing services needed vs Pietroniro. This can easily be explained, if you understand hockey systems and roles.

Annually, around November, if a player ‘under performs’ or produces anything near a perceived sub par effort, some fans will drone away ‘gone by Christmas!‘.

I personally do not understand why a top club would flout a contract like this, as it is well known, you sign with the Devils, you honour that paper.

Only a gross misconduct would terminate services, see Stefan Fournier.

In the case of Rory Hermann, this was a cover recruit that wasn’t necessarily needed, as defensive cover was more urgent and the issue with centres was coachable, a stretch, I am aware of…

So, where does this leave Riley Brandt and should his stay be down to a comparison with Pietroniro?

Brandt is on his 2nd full pro contract and in his third season with Cardiff. If he wasn’t valued, this article wouldn’t be written.

His role has limited overall ice time, however, he has played over 90 times competitively across three competitions, as well as two playoff stints, putting up 15 points in the process. He has also notched 92 PIMS, over a penalty minute per appearance.

During his time as a Devil he has won an EIHL Playoff Championship, Bronze in the Conti Cup and Fan Favourite award in 2022.

For the record, you don’t need a points per game player to fill each position on a roster and yes, Pietroniro adds an extra option for defence.

So, what is Brandt’s role? It isn’t an enforcer. He will oblige dropping gloves to anyone, however he doesn’t just go looking for this. He brings what all fourth liners should, to each game.

Energy.

If you rewatch the initial interview with Coach Russell, the top and fourth lines were the ones he was most impressed with and the main focus was to tweak and improve the middle deck.

So, why would you buy out a contract for a player who clearly has a role to play and executes it so brilliantly?

One incident has sparked the call again, however, it is fair to say if that happened during the competitive season, then yes, there would be a view for release, potentially.

However, he is yet to have done anything that would warrant such a review, so with a new contract and praise from the coach, Riley Brandt is staying.

As for a comparison to Pietroniro, it has to be understood, they do not fulfil the same need. So, comparing is a wasted endeavour. It would also be unfair to compare them both to Cole Sanford.

I agree, there is a massive upside to what Pietroniro can bring, he can also dance on the ice with anyone. I see the argument, however, his services are more nuanced for defence.

With the captain being rested for the season proper, the additional option for defensive cover has been paid in full. In fact, it has backed up previous analysis of the tandem Chad and Batch can offer.

This meant that Brandt could slot in on the fourth line as normal, but with a knock, a call up for Harewood eased that missing place. So far, recruitment is working.

Any more injuries or exclusions, this would strain the roster.

To conclude, there is no realistic need for Brandt to be released or replaced. He is a player in his own right, providing a role the team clearly have a place for. One that is adored by his club, fans and team mates.

He has also demonstrated a keen ability to have an incredible sniper like shot. So, like an onion, he has many layers, which also makes rivals cry. Perfect.

A great comparison to his style of play and role, would be that of retired Chicago Blackhawks legend and two time Stanley Cup Champion, Andrew Shaw.

A player that would put his body and heart on the line for his club, coach, team mates and fans. A true hockey guy. Tough, gritty, determined, feisty.

Winner.

As for the ‘Gone by Christmas’ crowd, perhaps a broadened view and some much needed, open minded positivity, could benefit their experience more.

Only a suggestion.
