Morning Kitbag; Coming Up for the Devils

Looking ahead to the next few weeks of hockey for the Devils is an exciting time for all involved.

This week there is a top table clash with big implications for the title race, the seasons expectations and how it might determine the offseason.

Three EIHL fixtures are on the calendar for the start of 2024, two at home vs 1st and 3rd respectively and a clash with Storm on the road, who have had a beating at the hands of the league leaders, so no doubt they will look to upset the fortunes of their Welsh rivals to get back into contention for highest league standings possible.

After that, there is the challenge of the 2024 IIHF Continental Cup Finals at home, with a massive focus on gaining the top prize for a club that is desperate to land meaningful silverware. It is a tough schedule, which has been the story of the season so far.

Recent results have dampened the mood down the bay, last 5GP only returning 2 – 0 – 3 and last 10GP posting a 6 – 0 – 4 overall, so despite some decent performances, the big games fell short for the league challengers.

Steelers

Against the Steelers, they meet for the third time this season, but first at home for the good guys. A win each way has the current series tied this campaign, the previous ‘litmus test’ was squandered to a shutout, which started the inconsistent streak in earnest.

Following back to back defeats for the first time since the early stage of the season, they know a response is needed to close the gap on the leaders and salvage some pride.

This has to become the corner stone for Pete Russells tenure, a chance for the team to prove themselves and assert their identity to the fans and league as a whole. This is big one.

Storm

Against Storm, this will be fixture five of 6, with Devils currently leading this series at 3-1 against their opponents following the key midweek clash. Storm as mentioned before, are looking to get back in the W column so at their barn, it will be no easy task. A must-win game after giving up too many wins against a rampant leader.

Giants

Just behind the Devils are old time foes Belfast Giants, who have hit some good runs of results lately, despite underwhelming performances and continuous calls for changes to be made both from their coach and fans.

This is another key game, as only a single point separate them to date. Any slip ups now, would heap pressure on the team, the organisation and would seriously jeopardise any hopes of a league title.

Beyond the EIHL, another competition looms.

The Conti Cup

Devils host the 2024 Finals for the first time, with group winners Astana Nomads, Katowice and the highly anticipated clash with Danish giants, Herning Blue Fox and a certain Mac Carruth.

This has quickly become a must win event, after collecting bronze in Angers last season, the expectations will be palpable, even with previous performances. This week is key to get the real preparations under way for a weekend hockey fest down the bay, with crucial points needed to stay in contention for the league title.

Expected returnees are Joey Martin and Cody Donaghey, so a full refreshed squad will be crucial to the challenges ahead.
